I’ve been asked to post pictures of our Riviera. So I’ve decided to do that and more.
OK. 1993 Buick Riviera. 3.8 liter (252 cubic-inch) turbo charged V-6 (@ 220+ hp), front wheel drive, 2 door coupe. For 1993, only 4,555 units were produced, partially due to its shortened model year.
I have been enamored with Rivera’s since Dad bought the 1967 Riviera GS (Grand Sport) “Super Wildcat”. I bought the Car from him in 1970?? I finally had to sell it due to excessive insurance and tire ( J60 X 15) costs. The front tires lasted OK but the rear only lasted a few hundred miles and cost $140.00 each in 1970…. And the insurance for this car on an under twenty-one year old…
Buick Riveras from 1966 through 1970 remained basically the same, but there were some important changes along the way. The 1967 Buick Riviera, while it looked virtually identical to the 1966 (save for a grille and taillights), used an entirely different engine. The 1966 Riviera had carried over the 425-cid V-8 from 1963-1965, an engine that unbeknownst to the public had reached the end of its road. Buick sorely needed a bigger, better V-8. The new engine started out for 1967 at 430 cid (and 360 horsepower), only five cubic inches bigger than the 1966 425. On the “super wildcat”, the dual 4 barrel carbs (Quadrajet) and tuned dual exhaust ( all attributed to Keith Black ) upped this to 390 HP and over 500 foot pounds of torque! It clocked 0-60 mph in less than 8 seconds. This was incredible for such a heavy “luxury” car. The Riviera had a “rolling” speedometer and was guaranteed to do 160 mph out of the showroom door. There were 52,000 Riviera sold in 1967, but less than 130 of these were the GS with the large HP output (dubbed the “Super-Wildcat” or “Keith Black”).
The name ‘Riviera’ first appeared on a Buick in 1949.
